Short answer: Yes. A winter bounce house rental runs fine in South Louisiana, where December through February highs sit between 45 and 65 degrees most days. Dry units only, no water. Below about 40 degrees the vinyl stiffens and I would move you indoors.
Every December I take the same call. A mom in Metairie or Lakeview has a January birthday kid, wants a bounce house, and opens with "I know this is a crazy question."
It is not. It is the most common question I get all winter, and the answer has not changed since I started loading trailers in 1992.
Is it really warm enough for a winter bounce house rental in Louisiana?
Yes, and parents consistently overestimate the cold problem. A 52-degree Saturday in Kenner feels cold to an adult standing still on the patio with a coffee. It does not feel that way to a 7-year-old.
Kids generate serious heat inside a bounce house and the enclosed vinyl traps it. Ten minutes in and they are handing you their jackets.
The real forecast question is wind, not temperature. We shut inflatables down in sustained winds above roughly 15 to 20 mph, and a January front brings wind more often than a June afternoon.
What is the actual temperature cutoff for setting up outside?
Here is the guide I use when someone calls with a forecast.
| Forecast high | My call |
|---|---|
| 65 and up | Outside. Ordinary party weather here. |
| 55 to 65 | Outside. Best winter conditions we get. |
| 45 to 55 | Outside, dry unit, jacket bin by the door. |
| 40 to 45 | Workable. Keep it short, food indoors. |
| Below 40 | Move indoors or reschedule. Vinyl stiffens. |
| 32 or below | No. A hard freeze is a safety call. |
Wind over 15 to 20 mph overrides that table at any temperature, and so does steady rain. South Louisiana gives us maybe six or eight true sub-40 days a season. The odds are with your party.
Why can't I book a water slide in December, January or February?
Because a wet kid at 55 degrees goes inside and stays there.
We run our water slides roughly March through October. December through February is dry only, including combos run with the water off and the dry stop in place.
You still provide a dedicated 20-amp breaker per blower and a clear, level space. You just skip the hose.
Why is winter the easiest time of year to get the unit you actually want?
In April and October I have families calling five weeks out for a themed unit and I am telling them it is gone. In January I can put your first choice on the driveway with a week's notice.
- You get the exact theme. The character your kid asked for, not the third option. Look through the deluxe themed combos and pick the real one.
- A week of lead time works, versus three to four in peak season.
- Add-ons stay open, including obstacle courses, tables and chairs.
Same equipment, same crew, same price.
Can I set up a bounce house indoors, and what ceiling height do I need?
Often yes, and that is how we work around a cold snap. School gyms, church halls and community centers across Jefferson and Orleans Parish host these all winter. Ceiling height is the question.
- Standard bounce houses and combos need 15 to 16 feet of clearance. Most school gyms clear it. Most church halls do not.
- Toddler units need far less. Many kiddie bounces fit under a 10-foot ceiling, which opens up halls and rec rooms.
- Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the ceiling peak. Beams, sprinkler heads and hanging lights stop us.
- Ask about ballast and the path in. Indoor floors are not staked, so we use sandbags, and the venue has to approve that.
Park and commercial venues carry a $500 delivery minimum versus $150 residential.
What about Christmas break, holiday parties and New Year's?
Christmas break is the best-kept secret on our calendar. Kids are off school two weeks, cousins are in town, and everyone wants something to do that is not another movie.
Holiday parties, church events and New Year's Day gatherings all work. Our party packages bundle the unit with tables and chairs, the real need when the guest list doubles.
Book Christmas week by early December. It is the one winter stretch that fills.
What should a party look like for a winter birthday kid?
Kids born December through February spend their childhood getting shortchanged. Parties skipped for the holidays, or shrunk down because "it's too cold to do anything outside." I have watched it for 30 years.
- Run 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the warmest block of a winter day. Not a 4:00 p.m. start.
- Food and cake inside, bounce house outside. Nobody stands around a cold patio table.
- Put "dress warm, sneakers, no boots" on the invitation. Socks only inside the unit.
- Two hours of bounce time is plenty. Winter parties run tighter and end cleaner.
That is a real party, not a consolation prize.
Frequently asked questions
How cold is too cold for a bounce house? Below about 40 degrees I move you indoors. Real cold stiffens the vinyl and it loses the give that makes it fun. A hard freeze at 32 or below is a firm no. From 45 to 65 degrees, which is most Louisiana winter days, outside is fine.
Can I rent a water slide in December or January? No. We run dry units only December through February, including combos with the water off. Wet play at 55 degrees ends with cold, unhappy kids ten minutes in. Wet units come back in March.
How far in advance should I book a winter party? One to two weeks is usually enough for January and February, our most open Saturdays of the year. Christmas week is the exception and should be booked by early December. Spring and fall want three to four weeks.
Can you set up a bounce house inside a gym or church hall? Yes, if the ceiling clears 15 to 16 feet for a standard unit. Toddler bouncers often fit under 10 feet. Measure to the lowest sprinkler head or beam, and confirm the venue allows sandbag ballast, since indoor floors are not staked.
What if it rains or the temperature drops the week of my party? Call us. Deposits are non-refundable but convert to a raincheck for a future date, so you are not out the money. We also shut down for sustained winds above 15 to 20 mph, a more common winter problem than cold.
