Short answer: March through May in New Orleans is roughly ten Saturdays carrying Easter, First Communions, crawfish season, field days, and spring birthdays. Book crawfish boil party rentals 6 to 8 weeks out. Calling in January or February for an April date isn't early. It's on time.
I've been staking units across Jefferson and Orleans Parish since 1992, and spring is where I disappoint the most people. October gets called our busy season. Spring is busier, and it sneaks up on families because the calendar still looks open in January.
It isn't open. It's just not booked yet.
Why do crawfish boil party rentals and Easter dates sell out first?
Six demand streams land on the same weekends: Easter, First Communions, crawfish boils, field days, end-of-year class parties, and spring birthdays. Add six weeks of 72 to 78 degree afternoons, and everyone in Metairie, Lakeview, and River Ridge moves at once.
Now subtract. Ten Saturdays, minus one lost to rain, minus Easter Sunday itself. You're competing for eight or nine usable days.
And when the price per pound drops in April, three families on one Old Metairie block book the same Saturday.
What does the March to May weekend demand outlook look like?
Here's how our board fills.
| Weekend | Driver | How tight |
|---|---|---|
| Early March | First warm Saturdays, early boils | Best odds of spring |
| Mid-March | Boils ramp, spring birthdays | Themed units go first |
| Late March | Boils peak, First Communions | Tight. 6 to 8 weeks out |
| Easter weekend | Egg hunts, family gatherings | Our hardest Saturday |
| After Easter | Overflow parties, field days | Tight, underestimated |
| Mid-April | Field days, church picnics | Commercial. Trucks route early |
| Late April | Wet units return, class parties | Very tight. Slides clearing |
| Early May | Boil tail end, Communions | Combos gone by mid-week |
| Mid-May | End-of-school parties | Heavy commercial load |
| Memorial Day | Pool-season kickoff | Water inventory goes first |
Easter weekend and everything from mid-April on is where I start telling people no.
How should I lay out the yard for a crawfish boil?
Put the inflatable on the opposite end of the yard from the pot.
A 60-quart pot of boiling water sits on a propane burner at ground level while eleven kids run a loop past it. The inflatable fixes that: it parks children in one place instead of circling the cook zone.
It only works if you place it right.
- Keep at least 25 feet between the burner and the inflatable. A real buffer, not a courtesy gap.
- Put the cook zone downwind, along a side fence, not centered where foot traffic crosses.
- Route the kid path so it never crosses the cook zone. Unit, cooler, and restroom on the same end.
- Keep the draining table on the cook side. Hot water runs off it.
- Give us level ground and a dedicated 20-amp breaker per blower.
- Keep the blower and cord out of the walking lane.
Grass gets staked. Driveway setups need sandbag ballast, so say so at booking.
What's the standard Easter egg hunt and bounce house setup?
Hunt first, bounce after. Every time.
Hide eggs before guests arrive, run the hunt in a tight 15 to 20 minute window, then open the inflatable. Open it first and no child hunts anything.
For mixed ages, split it. Under-4s hunt a roped-off section while a kiddie bouncer holds them, and the big kids clear the yard.
For 15 to 25 kids, a standard bounce house or a dry combo covers the widest age range.
When do wet units come back into play?
Late April, realistically. Some families push mid-April and regret it.
My floor for a water slide is 80 degrees and sunny. Below that, kids go down twice and then stand shivering while you eat the rental. Early May is safe most years.
For a mid-April date, book a wet/dry combo. We leave it dry and you decide the morning of. Any wet unit needs a working hose bib.
What do schools need to know about field day season?
The minimum and the lead time.
Parks and commercial venues, campuses included, carry a $500 delivery minimum versus $150 residential. An obstacle course plus two or three units clears it. One bounce house for a small campus won't.
Book 8 to 10 weeks out. Purchase orders and approvals eat more time than our calendar does, and every school from Kenner to Algiers Point runs field day in the same three-week band in May.
What's realistically left if I call in mid-April?
Less than you want, more than nothing.
Usually open: standard bounce houses, kiddie bouncers, tables and chairs, carnival games, foam machines, spin art, Sundays, weekdays.
Usually gone: deluxe themed combos on Saturdays, water slides for late April and May, the 26-foot rock wall, obstacle courses, multi-unit party packages.
A $50 deposit holds a date under $500, or 25% over $500. Non-refundable, but it converts to a raincheck. That's the whole cost of deciding in January.
Lock the date. Change the theme later.
Frequently asked questions
How far ahead should I book a bounce house for a crawfish boil? Six to eight weeks for a Saturday between mid-March and mid-May, which means calling in January or February for an April date. Boils cluster on the same weekends when prices drop, so several families on one street often want the same Saturday.
How far should a bounce house be from a crawfish boil setup? At least 25 feet, with the pot placed so the kids' path never crosses the cook zone. Put the inflatable on the opposite end of the yard, keep the draining table on the cook side, and route the blower cord out of the walking lane.
Is Easter weekend hard to book in New Orleans? It's the hardest Saturday we have. Egg hunt plus bounce house is the standard format across Metairie, Mid-City, and Gretna, and themed units are usually gone four to six weeks out. Reserve Easter weekend by early March. Easter Sunday itself runs quieter.
When can I rent a water slide in the spring? Late April at the earliest, comfortably from early May. I use 80 degrees and sunny as the floor, because below that kids stop using it after a few runs. For an uncertain mid-April date, book a wet/dry combo and decide the morning of.
What does a school field day cost to book? Parks and commercial venues carry a $500 delivery minimum, compared with $150 residential. Most field days clear it with an obstacle course and two or three units. Book 8 to 10 weeks out, since approvals take longer than the reservation itself.
