Short answer: For a water slide rental in New Orleans in fall, go wet through mid-October. South Louisiana still runs 85 to 93 degrees in September. Book a wet/dry combo for late October, then switch to dry units November through February.
Every September a mom in Lakeview or Old Metairie calls to say she read that fall parties should be dry, and wants to cancel her son's water slide.
Whatever she read was written for Ohio.
I have been loading trailers out of our Kenner shop since 1992, and I have never worked a September party where the kids wanted less water.
Is it still hot enough for a water slide in September?
Yes, and it is not close. We sit in the high 80s and low 90s through September, with a heat index over 100 most afternoons. Our first genuinely cool Saturday lands between October 20 and November 10.
Vinyl also holds heat. A dry unit in 91-degree sun gets hot inside, and by 2:00 p.m. you have kids sitting it out.
When should you book a water slide rental in New Orleans in fall versus a dry unit?
Decide by month, then adjust for the kids. This is the calendar I use across Jefferson and Orleans Parish.
| Month | My call | Why |
|---|---|---|
| August | Wet, no debate | 92 to 96 degrees. Dry is a hot box. |
| September | Wet, no debate | High 80s to low 90s every weekend. |
| Oct 1–15 | Wet | Usually 82 to 88 by mid-afternoon. |
| Oct 16–31 | Wet/dry combo | A front can drop us 20 degrees. |
| November | Dry | Too cool for standing around wet. |
| Dec–Feb | Dry | Mardi Gras season runs dry. |
One rule overrides the calendar: if the forecast high is under 78, run it dry. Wet kids at 74 degrees go inside.

What is a wet/dry combo, and why is it the safest booking?
A wet/dry combo is one unit with a bounce floor and an attached slide that runs either way. Hook up the hose and it is a water slide. Leave the hose off, drop in the dry stop, and it is a bounce house.
You book one unit and decide the morning of the party.
In late October I cannot tell you on Tuesday whether Saturday will be 87 or 63. Our deluxe themed combos work the same way.
Are water slides safe for toddlers and 3-year-olds?
Age changes the answer more than temperature.
- Ages 2–4: Skip the big slide. Use a kiddie bounce run dry, with a sprinkler nearby. Full-size slides have climbing walls a 3-year-old cannot manage alone. That is where the crying starts.
- Ages 5–8: Combo unit, wet. The sweet spot. They cycle through on their own.
- Ages 9–13: Full-size slide, $199 to $474 per day. The taller ones earn their keep.
- Mixed ages, most parties: Combo plus a separate toddler unit. Two age lanes, fewer collisions.
If your guest list is mostly under 5, a water slide is the wrong buy no matter the temperature.
What do I have to supply for a wet unit?
Less than most people expect.
- A garden hose that reaches the setup spot. No pool, no pump, no tanker.
- A dedicated 20-amp breaker per blower. Not a shared kitchen circuit. This is the most common day-of problem I see.
- A clear, level space with the grass cut short.
- The setup surface, disclosed at booking. Grass gets staked; concrete needs sandbag ballast.
Residential delivery has a $150 minimum, parks and venues $500. Deposits are $50 under $500 or 25% over, and convert to a raincheck.
Will a water slide tear up my yard?
It leaves a wet spot, not a mud pit, if you place it right. The mistake I see most often is putting the slide at the low point of the yard, because that is where the flat ground is.
Water follows grade. Point the exit end at the lowest corner, never the patio.
- Pick the highest, best-draining spot, even if it means a longer hose run.
- Go dry if it rained hard in the 48 hours before. Clay-heavy Metairie and River Ridge yards drain slowly.
- Keep the runout clear so kids are not all landing in one spot.
Unrelated to water: inflatables shut down in sustained winds above 15 to 20 mph.
How do you handle towels and swimsuits when half the parents did not read the invitation?
Assume a third arrive in street clothes.
- Put "wear a swimsuit, bring a towel" in the first line of the invitation, not the third paragraph.
- Text a reminder the morning of. Parents read texts, not old invites.
- Keep a basket of 8 to 10 cheap spare towels and a box of garbage bags by the gate.
- Ask two or three moms to throw an extra suit in the car. Someone always has a size 6.
Frequently asked questions
How late in the year can I book a water slide in New Orleans? Comfortably through mid-October most years, when afternoons still hit 82 to 88 degrees. After October 15 I recommend a wet/dry combo so you can decide the morning of. By November we set up dry almost exclusively, though a warm 80-degree Saturday will change that.
Do I need a pool or a water tank for a wet unit? No. A standard garden hose with normal household pressure is all you provide, along with a dedicated 20-amp breaker for each blower. The slide has its own splash pool at the bottom, and the water runs continuously rather than sitting there all afternoon.
How much does a water slide rental cost? Water slides run $199 to $474 per day depending on size and style, and residential delivery carries a $150 minimum. Deposits are $50 on orders under $500 and 25% over $500. They are non-refundable but transfer to a raincheck date.
Can I switch from wet to dry after I book? If you booked a combo, yes, up to setup morning at no charge. If you booked a dedicated water slide, call as early as you can and we will move you to a dry unit or a combo based on what is open that date.
How far ahead should I book a fall party? Three to four weeks for September and October Saturdays, which are our busiest of the year alongside spring. Halloween weekend and the Saturdays around school fairs and fall festivals go first. Weekdays and Sundays usually stay open with a week or two of notice.
