ASTM F2374, in Plain English
There is a written standard for how an inflatable should be built, anchored, run and maintained. Almost no customer has heard of it. Here is what it says.
ASTM F2374 is the Standard Practice for Design, Manufacture, Operation, and Maintenance of Inflatable Amusement Devices. It is maintained by subcommittee F24.61 (Adventure Attractions) under ASTM Committee F24 on Amusement Rides and Devices, and the current revision is F2374-24, approved in May 2024. It covers bounce houses, inflatable slides, obstacle courses and similar units used at parties, events and indoor entertainment centers. It is the document the rest of the industry's safety language points back to.
What it governs
F2374 is unusual in that it spans the whole life of the unit rather than one slice of it:
- Design — how the unit is engineered, including the anchoring system and features that reduce fall hazards.
- Manufacture — how it is built, including requirements aimed at mitigating fall risk.
- Operation — how it is installed, anchored, supervised and used.
- Maintenance — how it is inspected and kept in service over time.
The parts that matter most on site
Anchoring
Successive revisions strengthened this section considerably. It now addresses anchoring system design directly, including guidance on correct positioning and depth of anchor stakes, and the certification of wind load calculations. This is the single most important thing a setup crew gets right or wrong. An under-anchored inflatable in a gust is the failure mode behind most of the serious incidents you have read about.
Entrances and exits
The standard calls for impact-attenuation material at the entrance and exit areas — padding where riders step in and step out. That zone is where a disproportionate share of injuries happen, because it is where people are transitioning between a rigid surface and an inflated one.
Trained attendants
The operations section was expanded specifically to emphasize supervision by trained attendants while riders are using the unit, and to require that owner-operators maintain written training procedures for installers and attendants. In other words: the standard does not accept "our guys know what they're doing." It expects documentation.
Why it is not the whole answer
ASTM F2374 is a voluntary consensus standard, not a law.
It only has force where a state, a parish, a venue or an insurer adopts it — and adoption varies widely. That is precisely why the other layers exist:
- SIOTO certification trains the people who apply the standard.

- Insurance is what stands behind it when something goes wrong anyway.
- Venue rules — like the Jefferson Parish requirements — add site-specific conditions on top.
A company that meets one of these and not the others has a gap. Ask about all four.

No. ASTM standards are voluntary consensus standards developed by industry, manufacturers, regulators and safety professionals. They become enforceable only where a jurisdiction, venue or insurance policy adopts them by reference — which many do.

It applies to inflatable amusement devices used commercially — the kind a rental company delivers to your yard, a school or a park. Consumer-grade inflatables bought at a retail store are a different product category with different, generally weaker, requirements.
